The collection includes more than 400 moving models of mechanisms and gears made of wood,
metallic materials, glass, polymethylmethacrylate, two electrically powered model cabinets
each with 32 individual transmission units and two model cabinets each with ten individual
transmission units, all of which are publicly accessible. Johann Andreas Schubert (1808–1870)
began the collection in the 1830s, around the time of the TU Dresden’s founding. A large part of
the collection comes from the kinematic collection, assembled at the end of the 19th century.
Over the years, it has been complemented by models made of new materials and is still actively
used in teaching.
