The sustainability-oriented development process (a)
(SDP): The established design and development process
according to VDI guideline 2221, which is limited to the
implementation of classic technical and economic prod-
uct requirements, was used as the basis for the research.
Although a life cycle assessment also allows to quantify
the ecological product properties and to derive recom-
mended actions for the products, it is usually carried out (b)
on the existing product system due to the high level of
system knowledge required. As a result, ecological poten-
tials can only be tapped through costly system changes
or within the framework of further development cycles.
The SDP proposed by Levin Schilling, on the other hand,
makes it possible to carry out the ecological decisions al-
ready while the product is being designed. Such an eco-
logical assessment within the product development itself (c)
is more appropriate to the increasing demands in terms
of development duration and costs as well as product
complexity and quality than the subsequent life cycle as-
            sessment.
