The TU Dresden’s art collection originates from an »Altkunstbesitz« (a collection of art from
before 1945) with about 150 works. It gradually expanded, starting in 1951, to encompass 4,000
paintings, graphic works, sculptures and architecture-related art. The collection documents
artistic creation and the development of contemporary art since 1945, primarily in Saxony. In
addition to classical depictions, the holdings include portraits of university members and
works related to university history and its protagonists as well as to academic topics and con-
temporary history. About 130 works on and around the academic buildings, such as murals,
sculptures and installations, can be seen across campus. They were commissioned after 1950
as the campus was being rebuilt and expanded. The art collection includes works by Theodor
Rosenhauer, Hermann Glöckner, Karl-Heinz Adler, Curt Querner, Willy Wolff, Eberhard Göschel,
Max Uhlig, Hubertus Giebe, Petra Kasten, Paul Elsner and André Tempel, among others.
Since 2017, purchasing has proceeded systematically to maintain and further expand the
collection’s profile. Of particular interest are works with a decided reference to scientific-tech-
ni cal and historical questions of technology. To this day, the university art collection both repre-
sents and furnishes the public buildings on campus and staff offices and meeting rooms.
