The Teaching Exhibition for Hunting and Forestry of the Department of Forest Sciences was
compiled from the 1960s onwards and exhibited publicly as the Museum of the Forest in Grillen -
burg Castle. The collection comprises about 1,600 objects, including valuable furniture from
the Cotta family, a collection of rare hunting weapons, an extensive collection of trophies,
hunting uniforms and a collection of historical equipment for seed extraction, plant breeding,
forest protection and timber harvesting. In 2004, Grillenburg Castle had to be cleared and the
collection stored. Since 2016, large parts of the collection have been lent to the Osterzgebirgs -
museum at Lauenstein Castle and will be integrated into the new permanent exhibition. Special
collections such as the animal preparations and a collection of African hunting weapons are
now located in the Natural History Museum in Potsdam and in the Afrikahaus Sebnitz. Objects
relating to the history of forestry in Tharandt and in particular with reference to Heinrich Cotta
will continue to be kept at the university.

The collection presumably dates back to Max Kunze and includes instruments for measuring
the diameter and height of trees, logs and for determining the volume and weight of wood. The
oldest of the 153 exhibits on measuring the height and thickness of trees dates back to 1850.
