The collection of historical astronomical geodetic instruments comprises about 200 museo-
logical devices. These are primarily universal instruments, theodolites, levelling instruments,
meridian circles and compasses. The oldest instruments in the collection date back to the 19th
century, the early days of the Geodetic Institute, and were mainly employed in the training of
surveying engineers. The two most valuable devices, the Repsold universal instrument and the
universal instrument by Pistor and Martins, were used by the founder of the Geodetic Institute,
Christian August Nagel, in the Central European Arc Measurement.
After the restoration of the Beyer Building, the historical collection will once again be shown
to the public in the tower of the Lohrmann Observatory.
